Timothy Bernard, MD, MSCS

Timothy Bernard, MD, MSCS

Dr. Bernard graduated with from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 2001, and completed his child neurology residency in 2006 at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. As part of his National Institutes of Health mentored career research award, he attained a Master of Science in Clinical Science from the University Colorado in 2013.  He also served as Associate Director of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Clinical Research Organization (CCRO) from 2011-2015. He co-founded the stroke program at Children’s Hospital Colorado in 2007, creating a multidisciplinary clinic for pediatric stroke patients and a stroke alert protocol used at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. Under his  directorship, the Children’s Hospital Pediatric Stroke Program has maintained continuous research support for the past decade, with a history of funding from the American Heart Association, National Institutes of Health and Mountain States Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center.  Ongoing research projects explore the unique capacity for recovery in children with stroke, the use of novel imaging techniques in determining stroke etiology, and the role of thrombophilia in childhood stroke.  Dr. Bernard has a track-record of over 40 peer-reviewed publications in childhood stroke. Currently, the Children’s Hospital Stroke Program serves over 300 children with stroke in the Rocky Mountain Region and serves as a site for the the American Heart Association/Bugher research stroke fellowship, training the next generation of scientists dedicated to understanding and treating children with stroke.  The stroke program is also active within the International Pediatric Stroke Study (IPSS), recruiting over 200 children to participate in the study throughout the past decade.  Dr. Bernard serves the IPSS as a member of the Publications Committee and Chair of the Arteriopathy Subcommittee.

Dr. Bernard is actively involved in teaching and community outreach.  He serves on the Medical Advisory Board for the  International Alliance for Pediatric Stroke, as well as on the State of Colorado Stroke Board.  In addition to co-directing the AHA/Bugher pediatric stroke research fellowship, Dr. Bernard also directs the Child Neurology Residency Program at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. He has also worked with numerous medical students, providing mentorship in both a clinical and research capacity. Dr. Bernard co-founded the Colorado Pediatric Stroke Support Group in 2010 and maintains an integral role in many of the program’s activities. He is active in the stroke community and seeks to leverage this experience and passion at institutional, national and international levels, allowing for a broader impact in clinical care, quality, safety, research, and education in childhood stroke.
