Committee Description
The Professional Development Committee, in close collaboration with CNS staff, other CNS committees, and external partners, creates and oversees programs and resources supporting child neurologists’ ongoing professional growth and advancement. This includes identifying the evolving professional development needs of CNS members at every stage—from medical students and trainees to practicing clinicians and academic leaders—and designing initiatives that address those needs.
The committee supports professional growth through the development of diverse educational offerings such as continuing medical education (CME), webinars, case studies, leadership development skills, and continuing certification resources. A core responsibility of the committee is the authorship and oversight of the CNS Self-Assessment Examinations (SAEs), which serve as a critical CME and certification resource for members. Committee members contribute a total of 150 questions annually across three rotating SAEs covering a wide range of clinical categories, including:
- Epilepsy/paroxysmal disorders
- Neurogenetic
- Infectious disease
- Neuromuscular
- Headache and other pain syndromes
- Movement disorders
- Ethics
- Neuro-ophthalmology
- Toxic and metabolic disorders
- Neurobehavioral
- Cerebrovascular
- Demyelinating disorders/paraneoplastic
- Spinal cord and nerve root disorders
- Neuro-oncology
- Developmental delay/intellectual disability/Autism
- Traumatic brain injury/hypoxic brain injury/CP
- Neurology of systemic disease
- Sleep
The committee also serves as a point of contact for member inquiries related to the SAEs and ensures these tools remain clinically relevant, up-to-date, and responsive to the educational needs of the CNS membership.
