Dr. Danielle Guez Barber, MD, PhD, exemplifies the modern physician-scientist: an outstanding clinician, innovative neuroscientist, dedicated mentor, and passionate advocate whose research is transforming the field of neonatal neurology. As the 2026 recipient of the Child Neurology Society’s Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award, Dr. Barber is recognized not only for the scientific rigor of her work but also for her ability to unite laboratory discovery, clinical care, and patient advocacy around a highly focused goal—improving the lives of children affected by hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). 

Dr. Barber’s path to pediatric neurology reflects an exceptional commitment to neuroscience. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing an MD and PhD in Neuroscience at Yale University through the Medical Scientist Training Program, conducting doctoral research in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH. She subsequently completed residency training in Child Neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania, where she also pursued postdoctoral research before joining the University of Colorado School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 2024. 

Dr. Barber’s love of neuroscience began long before medical and graduate school. A defining influence on her career, however, came from her own family. While interviewing for child neurology residency in 2011, her first child was born prematurely with complications that resulted in HIE. These experiences profoundly shaped Dr. Barber’s perspective as both a physician and scientist. Dr. Adam Hartman, who had been Dr. Barber’s attending when she completed her sub-internship two months prior, now became her daughter’s first neurologist. Spending years alongside therapists, educators, physicians, and other caregivers provided an intimate understanding of neurodevelopment and the tremendous impact of environmental, rehabilitative, and family support following brain injury. Rather than separating her personal and professional experiences, she has used them to frame scientifically important questions that matter directly to patients and families. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Barber has consistently bridged fundamental neuroscience and clinical investigation. As an undergraduate at MIT, she worked in Dr. Richard Wurtman’s laboratory studying neuronal membrane metabolism. During her MD/PhD training, she built a unique collaboration between the laboratories of Dr. Marina Picciotto at Yale and Dr. Bruce Hope at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH, pioneering fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) techniques to isolate activated neuronal populations and capture the neural engram encoding an addiction-relevant behavior. During these laboratory years, her interest in child neurology was fostered by attending weekly clinic with Dr. Lori Jordan and supported through mentorship from Dr. Laura Ment. 

During residency at CHOP, mentorship from Dr. Jennifer McGuire introduced her to clinically focused research, resulting in an influential Pediatrics publication defining clinical features that distinguish Bell’s palsy from Lyme-associated facial palsy in children. Following Child Neurology residency, she joined Dr. Amelia Eisch’s laboratory, redirecting her experimental neuroscience expertise toward neonatal brain injury and the immune mechanisms underlying HIE. Today, at the University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital Colorado, she leads her independent laboratory while also caring for newborns with HIE throughout infancy and childhood. 

Dr. Barber’s laboratory investigates how innate immune cells—particularly microglia and macrophages—shape injury and recovery after neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Her work has demonstrated that the immune response differs substantially between males and females, providing new mechanistic insight into why neurological outcomes with HIE vary by sex. Her landmark preclinical finding showed that pharmacologic depletion of microglia before experimental neonatal hypoxia-ischemia worsens brain injury in female mice while producing the opposite trend in males. This discovery informs longstanding inconsistencies in the field and forms the scientific foundation of her current NIH NINDS K08 Career Development Award. 

Equally impactful has been her leadership in creating the first national HIE Registry linking standardized clinical information with caregiver-reported outcomes. Through a partnership between Hope for HIE and the Cerebral Palsy Research Network, she has built infrastructure that allows investigators to study long-term outcomes that truly matter to patients and families. The registry has already expanded into a multicenter collaboration involving approximately 20 investigators across 14 institutions and promises to reshape clinical research in neonatal neurology. 

Dr. Barber’s accomplishments have been recognized throughout her career with an impressive series of competitive honors. These include the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award, Yale School of Medicine’s MD-PhD Alumni Award, CHOP’s Foerderer Award for Excellence and Alavi-Dabiri Fellowship, selection as a K12 Child Neurologist Career Development Program Scholar, finalist for a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists, the Hypothesis Fund Award, and multiple foundation grants, including PERF, supporting her emerging research program. Most recently, she was awarded an NIH K08 Career Development Award to investigate sex differences in the brain immune response in a mouse model of neonatal HIE. 

Dr. Barber’s research philosophy reflects remarkable integration. Rather than pursuing unrelated projects, her laboratory science, clinical practice, registry leadership, and advocacy all reinforce one another in pursuit of improved outcomes after HIE. 

Dr. Barber is a national leader in patient advocacy. She serves on both the Medical Advisory Board and Board of Directors of Hope for HIE, helping connect research priorities with the needs of more than 15,000 affected families worldwide. She has also championed disability advocacy within child neurology by founding the Disability Advocacy Group at CHOP, organizing a comprehensive Child Neurology Society symposium, “Disability and Child Neurology: Society, Medicine and the Person,” and serving on multiple diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Equally important is her dedication to mentorship. She has trained dozens of undergraduate, graduate, and medical trainees, many from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine, while building a laboratory culture that emphasizes scientific excellence alongside inclusion and collaboration. 

Dr. Barber’s vision extends well beyond understanding mechanisms of injury. She seeks to develop better biomarkers, identify therapeutic targets, expand the national HIE Registry, and ultimately improve lifelong outcomes for children with neonatal brain injury. Her current trajectory—including NIH funding, national leadership, and growing multidisciplinary collaborations—positions her to become a leading investigator in neonatal neurology. 

Outside the laboratory and clinic, Dr. Barber enjoys teaching, mentoring young investigators, and public speaking on disability, neurodevelopment, and health equity. She also volunteers as a medical provider with Roundup River Ranch Camp in Colorado, extending her commitment to children with complex neurological conditions beyond the hospital setting—an experience that is joyful, eye-opening, and rewarding for providers while making possible pivotal childhood experiences for children who are not served by most camps. 

Her family remains central to Dr. Barber’s life and work. Her experiences with her oldest daughter have profoundly informed her approach to patient care, disability advocacy, and scientific inquiry. Rather than viewing disability solely through a medical lens, she emphasizes resilience, community partnership, and patient-centered outcomes that reflect what families value most. As a family, Dr. Barber, her husband, and their three children are avid Colorado skiers and Red Rocks live music enthusiasts. 

Through her scientific innovation, compassionate clinical care, unwavering advocacy, and extraordinary dedication to families, Dr. Danielle Barber embodies the ideals of the Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award. Her career has already changed the direction of neonatal HIE research, and her greatest contributions are clearly still to come!
