It is with deep regret that we notify you that our friend and colleague, Paul C. Marshall passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016 at age 71 while swimming in the sea off the Outer Banks.

Paul graduated from Jefferson Medical College, completed his pediatric residency and his child neurology fellowship at the Boston City Hospital and was a Clinical and Research Assistant in Neurology at the Hospital for Sick Children/ Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. He also served in the US Navy before joining the pediatrics faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979, where he was Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurology from 2001 until his retirement in April 2015. Paul was a compassionate and dedicated child neurologist and beloved colleague who received numerous awards as testament to his talents and boundless energy in teaching and clinical care. Paul loved music, traveling, hiking, a good glass of scotch, and most of all, his close-knit family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen and his daughter Elizabeth, who lives in Wellington, New Zealand.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m., at the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill.

A memorial event at UMass Medical School to honor Paul and celebrate his career and life is being planned for a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be directed to the Division of Child Neurology at UMass Medical School (checks can be payable to the UMass Memorial Foundation, Department of Pediatrics, and sent to UMass Medical School Office of Advancement, 333 South Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or donations can be made online) or to the Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center.
