In October 2012, Eric Kossof, MD, an epileptologist at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, interviewed Drs. Peter and Carol Camfield and their daughter, Dr. Renee Shellhaas, at the 40th Annual CNS Meeting in Savannah, GA. The interview offers prospective child neurologists rich insights into the changing nature and possibilities of a career in child neurology. The elder Camfields have established a formidable reputation for their collaborative research in pediatrics and pediatric neurology over the course of their 30-year-tenure at I.W. Killam Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Peter Camfield was given the Child Neurology Society’s highest honor, the Hower Award, in 2009. Their daughter, Renee Shellhaas, MD, is a child neurologist at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, specializing in epilepsy and neonatal neurology. Their wide-ranging conversation covers a variety of topics, including the Match, research, training, and the changing needs and styles of mentorship.
At its 40th Annual Meeting in Savannah, GA in October 2012, the Child Neurology Society convened a special Junior Member Seminar comprised of eight eminent panelists to provide a broad overview of changes in child neurology and the Child Neurology Society over the past four decades. The 20 clips taken from that seminar provide an excellent portal through which medical students might explore the possibilities of a career in child neurology.
