Description
The year focuses on clinical evaluation and management of children with neuromuscular disease, ages 0-18 years. Three to 4 pediatric neuromuscular clinics a week allow the trainee to see up to 160 outpatients each month. Electrodiagnostic sessions each week average 3 pediatric patients. The trainee will learn how to interpret histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses of muscle and nerve tissue. Clinics are multi disciplinary so the trainee gains experience in managing and treating the complications of weakness, such as restrictive lung disease, malnutrition, and mobility needs.

Weekly conferences shared with an active adult neuromuscular service include muscle and nerve biopsy conference, weekly journal club, neurophysiology lecture series, and EMG review. There is an opportunity to present cases and clinical research at an annual neuromuscular symposium held at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, the Carrell-Krusen Neuromuscular Symposium. There is an opportunity to rotate on the adult neuromuscular service. The neuromuscular faculty consists of five adult and one pediatric neurologist.

One position is available each year. The salary is commensurate with PGY-6.
